About Palatine, IL
Location
The Village of Palatine offers diversified lifestyles with a family atmosphere. Located in northwestern Cook County, Palatine’s favorable position in the Chicago Metropolitan area is very attractive to suburban dwellers and businesses alike.
Palatine is only 30 miles from the Chicago Loop and 14 miles from O’Hare International Airport. Access to major highways, such as Interstate 90, Illinois Route 53, and U.S. Highways 12 and 14, allow convenient access to major economic activity and nearby rural environments. Multiple interstate motor freight carriers are located in Palatine. Also, the Union Pacific Railroad (Metra) provides commuter service from Harvard to the Chicago Loop and nearby Chicago Executive Airport offers extensive facilities for private and corporate aircraft.
Annexations have expanded the Village to its current 12 square miles and a population of approximately 69,350. Substantial unincorporated and undeveloped areas have been annexed to the Village in previous years. Palatine’s neighbors are the Villages of Arlington Heights, Deer Park, Inverness, and Schaumburg and the City of Rolling Meadows.
Business & Growth
Palatine has developed into a self-sufficient community. Not only does the downtown business district continue to flourish in its small town atmosphere, but 30 total shopping areas throughout the community meet every shopping need. A total of approximately 800,000 square feet of office space is available in Palatine. The creation of a light manufacturing zoning classification has allowed light industry to enter the Village. Almost 250 acres are zoned for manufacturing purposes. The Village of Palatine is home to the world corporate headquarters of the Square D Corporation, manufacturer of electrical products, and Weber Stephens, manufacturer of barbecue grills. A United Parcel Service facility exists on a 48-acre site in northeast Palatine.
The Village of Palatine is committed to a growth that augments the tax base and ensures a continued high level of services to its residents. Over the past few years the Village has experienced an unprecedented amount of building activity, including single-family, multi-family and commercial developments. The attractiveness of Palatine can be attributed to the high quality of life that the Village has to offer. Palatine has a Village government that meets the needs of the community.
Government Services
The Council-Manager form of government functions under a Mayor and Council of six members, elected for four-year terms on a district basis. The appointed Village Manager is in charge of daily administration and implementation of policies set by the Village Council. The Manager, in turn, appoints department heads and staff.
Palatine’s residents are protected by highly trained Police and Fire Departments. The Village’s Fire Department operates out of five stations located throughout the Village, with each station housing modern emergency vehicles and related equipment.
Lake Michigan water was brought to Palatine through the cooperative efforts of Palatine and three neighboring communities and the water supplier, the City of Evanston. The water is softer and provides a constant supply for years to come.
Education
The future of Palatine is enhanced by the great educational opportunities available to the youth of the Village. Ten elementary and two junior high schools fully prepare the youth for secondary education. There are also three parochial elementary schools in the Village. The Village is also the home of two highly regarded high schools, Palatine High School and William Fremd High School. High standards are maintained which have produced decades of quality graduates. Education continues at William Rainey Harper Community College. This community college, located in the southwest corner of the Village, has approximately 24,000 students. Preparation for vocational and professional careers is taught throughout the educational process.
Recreation
Adding to the well rounded, diversified community is the recreational opportunities. The Palatine Park District, a separate taxing body, serves the community as well as a large surrounding area. The district maintains 28 parks, including an 18-hole golf course, totaling 623 acres. Hundreds of classes in fitness, sports, arts and crafts, and general interest topics are continually offered by the Park District, as well as numerous sports organizations. The Salt Creek Rural Park District is located within the boundaries of three cities – the southeast limits of Palatine, western edge of Arlington Heights, and the north-central border of Rolling Meadows. Th Salt Creek Park District is one of the “Best Kept Secrets” around, offering a nine-hole executive golf course, fishing, boating, youth and adult athletics, trips and a popular preschool program. A modern YMCA, 32 lane bowling alley, and indoor soccer facilities, to name a few, are also in the Village. A four-mile scenic bicycle trail travels through park and residential areas, has major thoroughfare underpasses and enters the Deer Grove Forest Preserve immediately north of the Village.
Arts & Culture
Cultural pursuits flourish in Palatine. Palatine boasts more than 90 civic, fraternal, charitable, social and performing organizations. Cutting Hall, run by the Palatine Park District is Palatine’s center for the performing arts. George Clayson House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, houses the Palatine Historical Society and Museum.
Library
The Palatine Public Library contains over 175,000 volumes and offers children’s programs, book discussion groups and workshops for the community. Hennen’s American Public Library Rating Index has named the Palatine Public Library among the top five libraries in the nation serving population between 50,000 and 100,000 people. Twenty-four churches of various denominations complement the Village. Palatine’s Street Fest, July 4th celebrations, and various other events promote the local community spirit.
In Summary
All in all, the Village of Palatine is committed to providing the best to its citizens by improving upon an already superior built environment. The Village knows it cannot rest upon its past success. To adequately serve its citizens, Palatine constantly evaluates its future. The Village Government, through its various departments, not only assists the citizens of today, but plans for the future as well.
